Plan a magic truffle trip in Amsterdam, step by step

Fresh magic truffles are legal for adults in Amsterdam, tourists included. What makes a visit go well is the planning around them: where you buy, which strength you pick, which room you use, who stays sober, and what happens to leftovers. This plan walks through seven steps in that order. Pick an answer at each step and your plan fills in on the side, ready to print at the end.

Step 1 of 7Arrive

How will you get your truffles?

You can buy fresh truffles over the counter in a smart shop, or order them online for delivery to an address in the Netherlands. Dutch-Smart ships orders placed before 16:00 on a weekday the same day, and Dutch deliveries usually arrive the next business day. Hotels are not obliged to accept parcels, so a PostNL pick-up point is often easier. Buying in Amsterdam

Step 2 of 7Law

In the Netherlands, yes. Truffles are not covered by the Opium Act, and the Supreme Court took that as its starting point on 10 April 2026 (ECLI:NL:HR:2026:450). Magic mushrooms and dried truffles are a different matter, and Amsterdam's bylaw restricts drug use in public. At home, truffles are usually a controlled drug. The law for visitors

Step 3 of 7Choose

Which strength suits you?

For a first time, mild. Dutch-Smart describes Mexicana as the mildest strain in its range and the logical first choice; Pajaritos and Tampanensis are a small step up. Medium and strong strains are for people who already know how truffles affect them. Whatever you pick, start low and wait at least an hour. The choice guide

Step 4 of 7Where

Where will you take them?

In a private room you have arranged, where the house rules allow it. Hotels working under the standard KHN conditions can set house rules and ask guests who break them to leave. Avoid parks, streets, boats and anything near the canals: in and around Amsterdam, 145 people drowned in ten years (NH Nieuws). Where to take them

Step 5 of 7The session

Who will be with you during the session?

Ideally one person who takes nothing. Effects start after 30 to 60 minutes and last four to six hours, strongest in the first two (Jellinek). Pick a day with nothing booked, not your arrival or departure day, and leave alcohol and cannabis out. Planning the session

Step 6 of 7Afterwards

What is your plan for the evening, and for help?

A quiet evening in, food, water and no bike until the next day. Save three numbers first: 112 for emergencies, 088 00 30 600 for the out-of-hours GP service and 0900 1995 for the Drugs Infolijn. Doctors will not hand you over to the police, Jellinek's tourist page says. Afterwards and help

Step 7 of 7Going home

What happens to leftovers when you leave?

They stay in Amsterdam. Truffles are a controlled drug in the United Kingdom, Germany, the United States and many other countries, and open Schengen borders change nothing about that. Buy for one session, take them at least a day before you travel, and bin what is left. Going home
